Programme

Weber - Oberon or ‘The Elf King’s Oath’
In 1824, Weber’s Der Freischütz caused the Manager of Covent Garden to visit the consumptive composer, and Weber agreed to compose a melodrama with songs - Oberon or ‘The Elf-Kings Oath’. Starting in fairyland the overture quickly transports us to Baghdad, Tunis and the Palace of Charlemagne via a storm and shipwreck.

Dvorak - Symphonic Variations
Possibly written as a dare when a friend challenged Dvorak to write a set of variations on a theme, The Symphonic Variations display the composers contrapuntal skills and wonderful touches of humour. The brassy opening mocked by high woodwind finally ends with a quickening tempo and full orchestral sound.

Brahms - Second Symphony Brahms Second Symphony was written in 1877 in southern Austria, a location inspirational for the composer. Renowned for his sardonic wit, the composer insisted he had written nothing so melancholy, and despite a magnificent first performance in Vienna still maintained the score needed a black edge.

GSMF Patron, Councillor Terence Patrick, who will attend, has nominated the Fountain Centre for the proceeds of the retiring collection.
