The President's Concert

The Heath Quartet                                  Philip Langridge             Terence Allbright               Andrew Mackenzie-Wicks

The Festival was very fortunate to have two locally resident internationally renowned singers as joint Presidents. Ann Murray DBE and Philip Langridge CBE, supported the aims of the Festival since 2004 and in 2006 gave Master Classes in the art of singing to two dozen young students from Guildford and the London colleges.  For GSMF 2008 Dame Ann gave a song recital.

Tragically, Philip Langridge died in Guildford hospital on Friday night 5th March.  Philip was hoping to sing with the Heath Quartet and Terence Allbright, but had to withdraw when the serious nature of his condition became known in January.  His passing will be felt by all who knew him personally and countless thousands who knew him only through his artistry on the opera stage, in song recitals, oratorio appearances and in DVDs and CDs over the last 45 years. The Festival will miss his continuing support and encouragement.  His wish was that the President's Concert should go ahead as planned without him.

We are fortunate to be able to announce that the well known tenor Andrew Mackenzie-Wicks will take his place in the Vaughan Williams.

Andrew Mackenzie-Wicks

Andrew Mackenzie-Wicks was a chorister at Chichester Cathedral and a choral scholar at Durham University, where he read music. He then studied singing and performance at the Royal Northern College of Music, assisted by The Countess of Munster Musical Trust. He has subsequently appeared with many of the major British Opera companies including Glyndebourne Festival Opera, English National Opera, Scottish Opera, Welsh National Opera, Opera North, Grange Park Opera, Opera Northern Ireland, the Dublin Opera Theatre Company, Buxton Festival Opera and English Touring Opera. His repertoire encompasses major roles in operas by Handel, Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti, Puccini and Richard Strauss and also more contemporary works by Stravinsky, Prokofiev and Britten. Andrew's extensive concert career includes performances throughout Britain and Europe and at the BBC Proms. He has toured with The Monteverdi Choir and Sir John Eliot Gardiner, The Gabrieli Consort and Paul McCreesh, and with The King's Consort.

The Heath Quartet (Oliver Heath - violin, Cerys Jones - violin, Gary Pomeroy - viola, Christopher Murray - cello) was formed in 2002 at the Royal Northern College of Music, under the guidance of the late Dr. Christopher Rowland.  Over the last year they have studied with Alasdair Tait at the Reina Sofia in Madrid and at the opening of the 08/09 season were appointed Junior Fellows at the RNCM.  In May 2008 the Quartet was selected for representation by YCAT and in November won 1st Prize and the Audience Prize at the Tromp International Quartet Competition held in Eindhoven. The Heath Quartet also won the top prize in the 4th International Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition in Vienna in 2009. They were also awarded two Special Prizes: one for the best interpretation of a composition by Joseph Haydn, and another for the best performance of a 20th Century composition.  Oliver Heath is also a musician with significant 'local' connections.

Terence Allbright studied piano in London with John Bigg, and composition at Cambridge with oriental musicologist Laurence Picken. With Ann Murray DBE, Terence Allbright has broadcast in England and in Ireland, and they have performed together at festivals in Aldeburgh, Killaloe, and Chichester, as well as in Paris and in The Long Room at Lord's. Together with baritone Stephen Roberts they have given recitals at Cadogan Hall's Schumann Festival, at the Northampton Festival, and in Mexico City. With the Irving Piano Trio he has appeared twice in GSMF 2004 and 2006 and accompanied Co-President Dame Ann in her recital for GSMF 2008 .
