Surrey Brass Philip Singleton “The Grand Tour” Vienna-Seville-Paris-New York-London Musical Director/Conductor – Phil Singleton Tuba Soloist Iain MacDonald Trombone Soloist Michael Straker Surrey Brass is an innovative and entertaining symphonic brass ensemble which captivated GSMF audiences in 2006 and 2008 with thrilling arrangements of classical and light-hearted pieces. By popular demand they return once again for GSMF 2010 for what is guaranteed to be another superb evening of high quality musical entertainment. Surrey Brass was founded in August 2001 by John Goodwin exactly 50 years after the foundation of the ensemble it is modelled on, the world famous Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. Musicians are drawn from some of the best players in Surrey. Surrey Brass regularly commissions new works and frequently collaborates with other local arts organisations. Surrey Brass actively encourages children to play brass instruments, and play at least one charity concert each year. Philip Singleton has been musical director of Surrey Brass since January 2009, and has already conducted a wide range of music with the ensemble. Performances have included Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and the Vienna Philharmonic fanfare of Richard Strauss alongside a range of light classics and jazz arrangements, including an extremely successful concert with star jazz trombonist Mark Nightingale. Philip studied at the University of Surrey as a trumpeter, with Alastair Mackie of the Philharmonia Orchestra, and since graduating Philip has performed as a soloist and as an orchestral musician at many of Britain’s major concert halls, as well as performances in France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.
